If you haven’t been paying attention to how your website is performing, you are losing valuable information. Paying attention to your web metrics can help you figure out exactly what is and isn’t working on your website.
Web metrics software is easily available and can provide you a lot of information. However, it can become overwhelming if you don’t know exactly what the information is and means. Once you learn what your metrics is telling you, then you can use that data to manage your website.
There are four basic ways to break down your web metrics: Traffic, Conversion, Performance, Maintenance.
Performance
Once you have your traffic and conversion metrics, you can start figuring out exactly how your website is performing. If you aren’t calculating and analyzing the following information, you will not be able to adjust your website to best improve your sales.
- Stickiness. See if your website is interesting to visitors by calculating the ratio of unique visitors to page views. The higher ration of unique visitors to page views, the “stickier” your website is.
- Relevance Track how long visitors stay on your website. The longer they stay, the more relevant your website. If your target audience isn’t finding your website relevant, then see what changes you can make to increase their interest.
- Cost Per Visitor, Per Lead, and Per Customer Take your total website cost and divide it by the number of visitors, leads acquired, or customers gained to track your return on investment (ROI).
Performance is the next step in tracking your web metrics. Keep a look out for the final post in this series dealing with Maintenance.
