Understanding Web Metrics and Website Performance – Part 4: Maintenance

If you haven’t been paying attention to how your website is performing, you are losing out on valuable information. Paying attention to your web metrics can help you figure out exactly what is and isn’t working on your website.

Web metrics software is easily available and can provide you a lot of information. However, it can become overwhelming if you don’t know exactly what the information is and means. Once you learn what your metrics is telling you, then you can use that data to manage your website.

There are four basic ways to break down your web metrics: Traffic, Conversion, Performance, Maintenance.

Maintenance
Once you start tracking your web metrics, you will learn a lot about your website and how to best maintain it. Here are 4 different maintenance metrics that will help you improve your website.

  • When To Update – Look at your metrics to see what days and times you have the slowest traffic. These times are optimal for you when you want to make updates to your website. In case anything goes wrong or you need to take your website down for a certain amount of time, you want to do your updates when it will have the lowest effect.
  • What Pages To Update – Follow which pages on your website are the most popular and least popular, and figure out why it may be the case. It might be because of certain pages are easier to find than others, because the pages are more keyword friendly, or because of the content and layout you have there. This can help boost the ranking of all of the pages on your website.
  • When To Promote Yourself – Once you know when your website is the busiest, then you can coordinate promotions, deals, and specials when your website is reaching its highest amount of traffic.
  • SEO Changes – Monitoring your search engine rankings will let you know how you are doing and what updates and improvements you need to make. You can also monitor how people are finding your website and see if there are certain keywords that are more popular for your website. Make sure those keywords are relevant to the content on your website, otherwise you might be getting visitors who are not looking for what you offer.

Once you start tracking your website metrics, it is important to use that information to make adjustments to your website and improve upon it. Constantly updating your website to be optimized for your target audience is one of the best ways to maintain an edge above your competition.
